Some zinc/ppm levels as of 2009 are:Chevron Delo 400-1496 / Lucas 15w-40-1565 / Shell Rotella T-1348 / Kendall Super D-3-1392 / Castrol Hypuron S-1297 / Caterpillar Deo-1337 / Mobil Delvac MX-1385 / Exxon XD-3-1380 / Certified Labs Strata Extreme-1580 / DA Lubricants 15W-40 diesel engine oil-1596. Most every thing else is less zinc. Go diesel!!!!!

Great info!!
I was reminded on another forum that these cars ate cams when oil had much higher zinc levels. Now I have no idea what to think.....

That doesn't sound right because all oil had higher levels of zinc in the "good ole days". Eastwood Garage sell's a zinc supplement in their catalog. All the rest of their stuff is GREAT, so I would think this stuff would be too.

I agree, higher zinc is better and I run an additive, but they still ate cams back then too.

Most of the 2.3 cam's that went flat, were because the only time the oil was changed, was when the red lite came on or the motor stoped. I've owned 16 Pintos and never lost a cam, even on a race car. Once bought one for $50 that had a "blown motor". Got it home and checked the oil, and added 4 qts and drove it for the next year. I've also used STP in them when they had hi miles with no problems.

I don't dissagree on the use of that additive or the use of 'diesel' oils, at the same time I have heard of people changing their oil regularly and still having an issue. I worked with a guy that worked at a Ford dealership and they changed cams on these engines alot. Can't say if the car owners were all to blame. How I feel: Gas engine with slider cam and no O2S or C/C = Use the zinc stuff. Bill

Look on that site at roller verse flat tappet (cams). About 1/2 way down he talks about 2.0 a.d 2.3 cams and why the 2.3 cam went bad.

Just read some more info. SM on the can means LOW zinc / SL means a little zinc / SJ means the most zinc. At the local Wally World, most of the oil I looked at was SM(bad for non roller engines). I found some SL(mostly hi mileage oil), but I did not find a single qt of SJ oil. Time for a Ranger roller cam.
